“Life is beautiful”

Not only “awake” herself, but Nguyen Thi Thom, a little girl from highland, also helps her disabled brother to lead a meaningful life...

Getting poliomyelitis which resulted in muscular atrophy, Thom has had more than 17 years undergoing physiotherapy on her own to be able to use the crutches and to alleviate hand trembling. Her family is too difficult and her body also has deformities, which made Thom always looked at herself and other people with disabilities with flinching eyes. Thom was scared of pity, inquisitive eyes into her debilities, thus she was afraid of communicating. When she had chance to join DRD’s activities such as skill training, peer counseling and singing in Life is Beautiful band, Thom realized that people with disabilities do not use the pitiful appearance to get financial support, but everyone has their own ability to live independently.

Thom admits that she does not sing well enough to sing solo. However, she is very sensitive to notes and good at vocals, so she becomes an indispensible member of the Life is Beautiful band. After a long time pursuing her passion for singing, Thom also learns on her own to play the organ and is currently learning to play the flute according to the instruction of the composer Ha Xuan Hong. It can be said that, from “being felt pity for”, Thom becomes more ebullient and braver. Thom said: “I am lucky to be instructed by Ms. Thuy Thien (Nguyen Thanh Thuy Tien, the singer of Trinh Cong Son music). When seeing how she denies a number of young people who did not sing very well, but still asked to join the band, I feel as though she recognized and appreciated the values of my efforts. It is commonly thought that singing for people with disabilities does not require high standards. Nevertheless, at Life is Beautiful, all of us practice as much as possible to not only sing beautifully but also perform on stage confidently and professionally.

Thom talked about her brother who suffers from Japanese encephalitis, she used to think she “had to nourish her brother for all her life, he would be unable to do anything.” Because of having the same thought, her family decided to “detain” her brother for years. One time she observed the children with cerebral palsy performing at DRD, Thom was awakened. Immediately she contacted her family to bring him to Sai Gon to learn a job skill. At the moment he has already got the vocational diploma, he usually smiles and gets fewer seizures…Now for Thom, life is very beautiful!
