Nguyễn Thị Thanh Hoa

Life changes from little things

Since getting rid of the negativity in her life, which made her fearful and insecure about her disabled legs, Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa has found her life much more relieved.

“In the past, I used to see myself as a heavy burden to my parents because of my disabled legs. My house was the poorest one in the area. My mother had to carry heavy baskets of rice and potatoes to sell just for very little money. My father managed to do all kinds of jobs: masonry, bicycles fixing, electric technician, drink selling… Working hard all day long did not help my family be less poor. Because all money my parents earned and borrowed was used for my treatment in Hanoi.” Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa said. For her, it was almost torment and a secret feeling of inferiority which made her feel incapable.

Thus from the beginning, Hoa has always tried her best: to walk, to study well, to take advantage of her writing skills in order to support her parents… Nonetheless Hoa still kept herself within narrow relationships and was not proactive. She thought people with disabilities shouldn’t appear too much in front of other people because “our appearance only made them feel pity for us.”

Coming to Sai Gon to study at Pedagogy University, Hoa refused to ride three-wheel motorcycle; she persisted with two-wheel bike. Hoa thought “I am not that seriously disabled”, she also did not want to be stared at wherever she went to. However light and low the bike was she still traveled with great difficulty. Even when her legs touched the ground, the bike was unable to stand firm…Those obstinacies did not cease until she had chance to take part in activities, approach the nature of “disability,” and meet more people who have same situations. Hoa said that course of communication, public speaking, group working skills… at DRD helped Hoa feel more confident and work more sensibly and logically. More importantly, thanks to various kinds of support, including tips on how to solve problems (from little things in daily life to complications in her mentality) she acknowledges and accepts her disability.

She realizes that her life becomes easier and happier. She usually organizes games for everybody, she no longer trembles till fall down when standing in front of a crowd, and she thinks “it is normal for people with disabilities to love and get married.” Changes made by herself day by day may not be something big to many people, but they are always sustainable values. At that time, you have built up for your own a substantial fortune…
