Huỳnh Thị Kim Hoàng

The Hidden “Otter”

Two silvers and one bronze medal in swimming at the Para Games in January 2014, two golds and one silver medal in swimming at the National Disability Sport Contest in July 2013. Although Hoang only started swimming in May 2013, she has attained many remarkable achievements. Moreover, with her energetic appearance, hardly anyone  knows that Huynh Thi Kim Hoang used to be a girl with low self-esteem and an inferiority complex…

Growing up as a carefree child, it was not until junior high school when she became a maiden(this is a stange word – Maiden – it either first first or it means a girl in very old English – I’m not sure what you mean), Hoang was aware of her crippled arm. The feeling of low self-esteem, inferiority and sadness dogged and obsessed Hoang during those years at school. At college the environment was more open, Hoang was happier thanks to her friends’ warm love. The way of living and thinking of inferiority ingrained in her since childhood made her live with the latent desire to emerge, but at the same time, with self-constraint because of her crippled arm.

“Entering the workplace after graduation, I was still a shy and timid girl. Observing and thinking about the surrounding situations was not enough for me to break through and make changes because I myself had been used to a closed life for a long time”, said Kim Hoang. Now Hoang has become accustomed to the activities and skill classes at DRD, and she has acquired comprehensive knowledge and an awareness of disabilities and PWDs, she no longer feels lonely, inept, or inferior to other people in  society! Also, Hoang neither hates the ones who mention the word “disability” nor avoids it. She gradually has become a self-confident and reliable person towards people around her.

The change in inner values of a person, however small, always links with chances. Hoang’s new life has accidentally led her to the opportunity of swimming. In just a few short months, she has somehow proved her capability. Swimming is the passion that has been concealed very carefully since her childhood. More than that, Hoang, together with several friends, have been currently collecting their own expertise to create a group for website designing and graphic printing. After two years, there have been more customers coming to the group.
